How effective is preaching?

“We polled adult church-attenders to learn their perceptions of the sermon time. Here’s some of what we discovered:

  • Just 12 percent say they usually remember the message
  • 87 percent say their mind wanders during the sermon
  • 35 percent say the sermons they hear are too long
  • 11 percent of women and 5 percent of men credit sermons as their primary source of knowledge about God” (Schultz J and Schultz T 1994: 189)

  1. I still wonder why most churches continue to place such a big emphasis on what seems to be not very effective – preaching.

I came across the learning pyramid diagram: Average retention after 24 hours: Lecture 5%, REading 10%, Audiovisual 20%, Demonstration 30%, Discussion Group 50% , Practice by Doing 75%, Teaching the material 90%.

So why do we continue to lecture. Seems like an expensive treat for the elite.
